Flavor of the Month June 2014

This month's flavor isn't exactly new; we've been making a version of this layered lip balm for years. First we poured them in clear jars, but later decided that they were much more fun in tubes.

This year, Balm on the Fourth of July is our Flavor of the Month for June, so there's plenty of time to get this stars and stripes balm to celebrate Independence Day.

The stars are on the label, but the stripes are inside: three stacked flavors in one tube. Start with yummy strawberry, followed by tart lemon ice in the middle, and finish with sweet blueberry.

Balm on the Fourth of July is available through July 4, at 15% off like all of our Flavor of the Month balms.

We'll also be including a Balm on the Fourth lip balm in orders placed by our favorite customers (Flavorites). Remember, we don't pick favorites, so you get to decide at checkout whether you'd like to join!

I think the last time I made Balm on the Fourth, the red layer was cherry flavored. I hope you like this new version! Have you ever tried a layered lip balm?

He or She? Sneak Peek Baby Shower Favors

Baby Shower Favors | Label #235, Tag #1351

What do you do if you're throwing a baby shower and you don't know the gender of the baby?

You make everything pink AND blue, that's what!

For our sneak peek this week, we took the gender reveal design (#1351) and used some pink and some blue in the text, some pink and some blue tulle for bows (see in the background?), and the Lullaby lip balm...isn't pink or blue. (They're keeping it a secret.)

What themes do you like for a gender non-specific baby shower?

Sneak Peek at the Beach

Beach theme party favors with custom labels and tags

This week's sneak peek is soft sand and warm breezes, blue sky and shady palms, sand dollars and tropical drinks....

Beach parties and destination weddings just seem to require coconut and citrus flavors, don't they? Coconut Twist lip balm is mostly coconut, with just the slightest hint of lime. (Great, now I'm singing that Harry Nilsson song.)

PiƱa colada of course combines coconut with pineapple and rum. (There's a song for that, too.) And Margarita balm is a great blend of lime with tequila. (Oh no, not another song...)

This has been a fun week making tropical favors (singing, dancing) and dreaming about beach weather.

What's your favorite tropical flavor?

Favors with Labels AND Bows?

I have a couple of reasons for sharing a sneak peek of these particular favors this week.

1. Chevron. I just love it and I enjoyed this color combination.

2. These favors have custom labels, bags, and bows, but no custom tags. This option isn't requested very often, so it's not on our site yet. Just let me know if you're interested.

I thought I'd also share an update this week. Back in March I shared a sneak peek of some custom cherry blossom favors. Here's what the finished favors looked like:

What do you think? Do you like seeing sneak peeks of what we're working on? What would make this more interesting?

(I've been trying to share more of our work on my new Instagram...please follow along there if you're interested!)

7 Ways to Display and Share Your Party Favors

You've planned your whole party. You have the menu, the guest list, and all the decor ready to go. You've even ordered the favors—but how are you going to share them with your guests?

While some order lip balms, lotions, or lavender sachets planning to include them in larger gifts for their guests, others may be wondering just how to present their favors. Here are 7 different ways to display and share your party favors

1. Rub a dub dub—lip balm in a tub. Painted metal or galvanized washtubs make great display containers for your favors (especially when your favors include duckies). Line with tissue paper or decorative fabric and arrange favors inside. Tub can be used as a centerpiece or placed next to a guest book.

2. A tisket, a tasket—favors in a basket. Probably one of the most common ways to share party favors, choose a decorative basket lined with a napkin or fabric swatch, then add your favors. Select a grouping of similar baskets in different sizes if you are offering an assortment of favors.

3. Everything in its place. Set each favor directly on a plate or on a folded napkin at each place setting to share with guests. This is a sweet way to welcome guests to your table.

4. Treats & Sweets. Set up candy or apothecary jars as a centerpiece on your serving table, then fill with favors and allow guests to help themselves. Very decorative and works well for an assortment.

5. Favors Gone Wild. Let your favors escape and decorate the table. Get creative with your tablescape, and include props like feather boas, fashion accessories, and kids' toys.

6. Bottoms up. For Girls' Night or a Bachelorette Party, why not start with a round of favors? Add one to each glass at the table. We love martini glasses, but margarita, hurricane, or even wine glasses look pretty with a little favor. You can always match your lip balm flavor to the glass shape!

7. Favors in Bloom. Perfect for floral theme favors or spring events. Tie favors onto branches to create "floral" arrangements for each table.

There are so many other ways to share your party favors. What's your favorite?

Our new gift sets and favors celebrate that wacky craving in sweet (and sour) balms. 7 Uses for Lavender Sachets

Have you ever received a lavender sachet at a wedding or bridal shower? Lavender buds are sometimes shared with wedding guests to shower the new couple after the wedding, so you probably didn't have any extra to take home. But if you have a lavender sachet after a bridal shower or other event, here are a few things you can do with it.

1. Tuck sachet into a drawer to give linens a floral fragrance.

2. Pin into a pillowcase for sweet dreams.

3. Drop into the bath for a quick tub tea. You can use the whole sachet, or pour out a few tablespoons of buds and tie them into a muslin bag for easy "brewing" (and clean up).

4. Empty buds into a potpourri dish or decorative bowl and stir buds occasionally to release fragrance

5. Fill a spare sock with buds and tie the end, then toss into the dryer to scent laundry

6. Mix buds with baking soda and sprinkle on carpet, then vacuum up and enjoy the fresh scent

7. Brew lavender buds on stove top (or in a small crock pot) with other herbs and citrus peels as a quick air freshener. Add buds, peels, herbs, cinnamon sticks, and any other favorites to your pot, add water, and heat uncovered at low temperature to enjoy the fragrance.

Showered with Love

The point of every shower is to "shower" the bride-to-be (or mom-to-be) with love. (And gifts, of course...who could forget the gifts?)

In this week's Sneak Peek, we got quite literal with the whole showers thing. Pull out those umbrellas, folks, 'cause it's raining hearts. And apparently all that love really makes the flowers grow, too! (Makes sense to me.)

I have always loved simple daisy designs, and the matching umbrella seemed perfect for a spring shower.

Do you have a theme idea that's new or different? I might have mentioned (a few times, sorry) that I love (love love) working on new designs that fit with your party theme. If you want to chat about your ideas or see some examples, contact me. I'd love to work with you!

Plant a Flower Day

Did you know that today is Plant a Flower Day

We're anticipating yet another snowstorm here, so I won't be planting any real flowers for a few more months. But I'm ready for spring and green leaves and bright blossoms, and judging by my work recently, I'm not alone.

All the flowers in the past few weeks inspired me to "plant" them all together. Choose from callas and cherry blossoms, forget-me-nots and tulips, poppies, orchids, and more, all in one place. (Well, or three places, depending on how you want to wrap them.: Floral balms with custom labelscustom tags, or custom tags AND labels.) What's your favorite?

Today's Sneak Peek is cherry blossom balms with custom cherry blossom tags. I love these with the eggplant tulle she chose.

Now Available: Almond Oil-Free Lip Balm

After several requests, I'm happy to share that we now have an almond oil-free lip balm. Our original lip balm formula contains sweet almond oil (as well as coconut oil, beeswax, avocado oil, cocoa butter, shea butter, vitamin E, flavors and colorants.) Our new almond-free balm contains hydrogenated soybean oil, castor oil, beeswax, cocoa butter, Shea Butter, vitamin E, flavors and colorants. It's currently available in Birthday Cake flavor, but I'm working on other flavors. Let me know if you have any requests!

While I use only flavors without nut oils in this new balm, our facility is NOT nut-free. We are offering this as another option to our customers, but we don't recommend the use of our balms by individuals with severe nut or soy allergies.

You can find these new balms in our lip balm favors with custom labels, custom labels and tags, or lip balm and lotion favors. Please contact me directly with any questions or concerns.

From One Shower To Another...

How do you create a Perfect Storm of party favor awesomeness?

Start with a clever shower design suggested by a creative customer.

Follow with a flurry of mixing, bottling, labeling, and wrapping.

Shovel on a real-life storm of epic proportions, complete with shipping delays and delivery mishaps. Hilarity ensues.

Hilarity? Yes! Even with packages missing and no delivery date in sight, my fabulous customer remembered Rule #3: Never panic. Shortly after the shipping company told us they had no idea where our boxes were, the favors magically appeared at their new home, ready to pamper Jacqueline and her friends in a few short weeks.

I love happy endings. And funny customers who make me laugh when I'd normally be stressed.

This week's Sneak Peek is bridal shower bath gel favors with Blue Hydrangea designs.

Wine Bridal Shower Favors

Several years ago I made a set of lip balms inspired by wines. The flavors are varietals "paired" with fruits or chocolate, and they were created for vineyard themed events or as custom favors for wine tastings. Our Varietal lip balms used to be a special order, requiring a 10-piece minimum, but they're now available to purchase one at a time or in any assortment you'd like.

Varietals are available in Chocolate Zin, Cherry Merlot, Berry Cabernet, and Sauvignon Blanc Pear. (The Berry Cab is the most popular of the four flavors.)

These are the standard balms, without any personalization, but Varietal balms are also available with custom labels, custom tags, and custom tags AND labels

Please contact us if you have any questions at all about personalizing for your event.

What's your favorite varietal?

Fun, Fierce, Fabulous Sneak Peek

I cheated this week.

Not only didn't I post the Sneak Peek on Wednesday, I chose a photo that isn't really a peek. I just loved this choice of wording and had to share the whole thing: Fun, Fierce, Fabulous 40. Perfect.

I also wanted to share that just about any label design can be reworked for the lip balm tubes, if you prefer that way of applying balm. (Lots of people do.)

Don't hesitate to contact me if you want to check out a design in tubes instead of jars. (Bonus: you get to choose your cap color, too.)

Matching Pantones for Spring 2014

Planning a trendy spring event? Every year Pantone makes its color predictions for the coming seasons and every year we share our closest matches. Make sure your favor and gift colors are on-trend by choosing from our matching tulle colors.

Pantone's Spring 2014 palette includes a rainbow of colors (see above), from bright red Cayenne, bold Celosia Orange, glowing yellow Freesia, warm Sand, soft green Hemlock, dove gray Paloma, cool Placid Blue, rich Dazzling Blue, pastel Violet Tulip, and the color of the year, Radiant Orchid (at top above).

Our closest palette matches are shown above. If you're looking for...
Cayenne, try our Coral
Celosia Orange, try our Orange
Freesia, try our Goldenrod (or Yellow)
Sand, try our Sand (imagine that!)
Hemlock, try our Sage
Paloma, try our Steel Gray
Placid Blue, try our Powder
Dazzling Blue, try our Royal Blue
Violet Tulip, try our Lavender
Radiant Orchid, try our Pansy

We think the violets and purples will really take off this year. Pantone chose two, and we have six shades from the very pale Wisteria through Pansy, blueish Lavender, grape Purple, grey Amethyst, and deep Eggplant (see below). While none of our colors perfectly match Pantone's color of the year, we think Pansy, a lighter tint, will work for most projects.

If you have a palette in mind and want to talk about matches, we'd love to work with you. Please contact us to talk about your event!

What are YOUR predictions for the really big colors this spring?

Introducing Sneak Peeks

For some time now I've been sharing "sneak peeks" on our Facebook page

I often work on projects a week or month or more in advance and I don't like to spoil surprises, but sometimes it's hard to wait. Sneak peeks are a way for me to share a few details of work in progress without spilling the beans. (Okay, maybe a few beans...)

I realize that not everyone has joined us on Facebook (why not?! It's fun! There are cookies! And Muppets!), and maybe you'd like to see some photos of work in progress, too? So this week I'm starting a new Sneak Peek feature for Wednesdays.

You'll notice that they are often Extreme Close-ups. In a few weeks I'll post the follow-up, regular photo, so you can see what the completed work actually looked like!

Cherry Blossom favors with custom tags and labels

This week's Sneak Peek is a reminder that we can do custom colors. Note that the paper and labels are ivory instead of white for this pale-pink-and-cream bridal shower. Please don't hesitate to contact us if you have a special request for colors or other details. (We love that.)

Flavor of the Month December 2013

"We elves try to stick to the four main food groups: candy, candy canes, candy corns and syrup." -Buddy the Elf

It's not often that our balm of the month flavor is one of the four main food groups for elves, but if it's gonna happen, December is the month. Of course I'm talking about Candy Cane

With a bit of peppermint essential oil and a hint of sweetness, this balm tastes like the real thing. (We think Buddy would approve.)

Every order placed in December will receive a free tube of Candy Cane lip balm. It's also available here through the end of the month (or while supplies last).

Flavor of the Month November 2013

Sometimes our balm of the month shares the flavor of the season, and November's flavor is one of our favorites. Our Cranberry balm is a little bit tart and quite a bit sweeter than the real thing.

Every order placed in November will receive a free tube of Cranberry lip balm. It's also available here through the end of the month (or while supplies last).
