Making Happy

What makes you happy?

I remember the day I took this picture of my kids. There were other days like it, days when a popsicle or ice cream would make their whole day. Why do we stop having days like this when we grow up?

I feel like so much of my time is spent working on something: myself, my business, my relationships. Most of the time I'm OK with that, but sometimes it really does feel like work. This particular day with my kids didn't feel like we were "working" at all. They were themselves, enjoying the sunshine and a treat, playing in the sandbox, running in the grass. And I enjoyed the day just as it was. Looking back, this was probably some of the best "work" I've done on my relationship with them: I enjoyed them without scolding or correcting or all of that other "mom" stuff. I remembered why I wanted to be a mom in the first place. It was a pretty happy day for all of us.

What makes YOU happy?

  1. What a super post! I too enjoy those times when I can be with my kids just to have fun, not to train or correct them. I did that with my son this past Saturday night while my daughter was at a sleepover. We saw the movie he wanted to see (lucky for me, it was The Lion King) and went to a restaurant he wanted to go to and ate what he wanted to eat. He was happy and I enjoyed being alone with my son. He's more than a boy. He's a really neat guy and I loved seeing how much fun I could have with him without worrying about doing the "mom thing." Love this post, thanks!

  2. dM, I LOVE having "dates" with my kids! I took my son to a movie of his choice last year and it was a blast! You do get to enjoy them in a different way when it's just the two of you. That sounds like such a fun time with your son (and something you'll both always remember)!! Thanks so much for sharing!
